'Box.' Man And Robot Unite In Next-Level Video Experiment
In the mood for feeling mesmerised? Take a look at Box, the world's first synchronised live performance of man and machine. Built by San Francisco studio Bot & Dolly, they believe this will "tear down the fourth wall" and "define new genres of expression."
This technological light show is made possible through the use of two robotic arms and projection mapping, which is an increasingly common video technique that turns ordinary objects into mind-bending moving images.
Two Kuka industrial robots move walls around, on which CG imagery is projected, turning these flat surfaces into 3D boxes, a pile of cubes, and a Portal-esque teleporter. It's a dazzling demonstration of this technology working in true sync to achieve a unique digital performance art piece.
"Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration," says creative director Tarik Abdel-Gawad. "Through large-scale robotics, projection mapping and software engineering, audiences will witness the trompe l'oeil effect pushed to new boundaries."
